January Blues (Study)

January Blues is from a body of work inspired by local landscape: agricultural fields, rolling hills and the meandering rivers and creeks of the Walla Walla Valley. The repetition of simplified shapes layered on top of a background of color washes creates a subtle visual flow throughout painting’s surface. Starting from sketches of local landscapes, Broel incorporates aerial and angular perspectives, establishing points of view from different vantage points as a way of examining the “fullness of place.” The choice of palette resonates with local color and feelings evoked by the shroud of fog and ice that can blanket the Walla Walla landscape in winter.
